Stylometry: The Math behind Style
The most popular question in any mathematics classroom is "where will I use this in real life?" Applications of mathematics can help students to see the answer to these questions. Math is not simply plugging in numbers, it involves reasoning and it truly is everywhere. While it is sometimes difficult to see how math may apply, applications of mathematics can provide both students and adults with proof of the applications.
Stylometry is typically defined as the statistical study of written word, but has since been applied to the visual and musical arts. With applications in various applications in both forensics and the arts, Stylometry is both interesting and extremely mathematical. Stylometry rests on the idea that an author or artist has specific characteristics that can be quantified and are not consciously controlled. Since its introduction long ago, it has drawn frequent criticism from those believing that it is not possible to quantify an artists or an authors "style". The increase in technology in the world of mathematics has led to vast improvements in the field of Stylometry. With today's computer programs information can be analyzed and sorted with both speed and efficiency.
